The Triple Helix will be launching its 4th Edition of the Journal on Thursday 17th September at 6-8pm.

The Launch will be held in room G08 of the Law School Building at the University of Melbourne.

The Missing Link

Appropriately named Darwinius masillae, this recently discovered fossil of a lemur may prove to be a valuable link in the human evolutionary chain.

The world likes to stop and stare whenever the scientific community announces a fossil discovery of this calibre: particularly one which purports to rattle the very foundations of our human evolutionary history. Some scientists argue that Darwinius masillae, nicknamed "Ida" to the masses, can be identified as our great-great-great-great-great-grandfather. Others prefer to acknowledge that Ida is more of a great-great-great-great-aunty. Regardless of the misnomers, Ida is an important discovery for evolutionists around the world.

Fossils are always inherently fascinating discoveries. With modern society's current obsession with the exploration of life beyond earth, it's always intriguing to note that we have yet to fully discover our own planet. Earth remains a plethora of diverse creatures. Humanity's endeavour to find life amongst the stars may prove fruitless for decades to come, but if we ensure a healthy exploration of what we have whilst we still have it, this story is an indication that treasures are still abound.

TTH Darwinism Essay Competition - 2009

To celebrate 200 years since the birth of Charles Darwin and 150 years since the publication of The Origin of the Species, the Triple Helix is running an essay competition for all undergraduate and honours students at the University of Melbourne.

The Origin of Species, sparked an intellectual, social and cultural revolution, radically transforming our understanding of life on this planet – the origins of life, our relationship to other species and the way life can adapt or fail to do so in the face of environmental change.

Essays on any topic exploring an aspect of the relationship between Darwinism and society – both past and present – are eligible for submission. What does the theory of evolution mean for our understanding of politics, economics, culture, philosophy, law, medicine, psychology, sociology, history and religion? We want your thoughts!

Great prizes to be won!

Essays must be between 1,500 and 2,500 words in length and conform to the Triple Helix referencing style.

Entries will be judged by the Triple Helix Editorial Depart
ment and the winner presented with their award at the official launch of our September edition.

The winning entry along with the shortlist will be published in print and online in September 2009.

Submissions are due by May 29 2009

Writing for the Triple Helix

The Triple Helix publishes articles by University of Melbourne students and by students from participating international institutions.

Undergraduate and Honours students enrolled at the University of Melbourne are eligible to submit articles, which have the opportunity to be published internationally as well as locally in online and print editions.

We are currently accepting submissions for our September 2009 edition. The submission deadline is May 29 2009. Submissions not ready for publication in September may be eligible for publication in our Semester 1 2010 edition.

What is the Triple Helix?

The Triple Helix is an international, completely undergraduate run, Journal of Science, Society and Law. Individual Triple Helix Chapters exist at some of the worlds most prestigious Universities and produce their own biannual print and web publications.

As a forum for undergraduate students to voice their opinions on cutting edge issues in science and society, the Triple Helix aims to provide a unique environment for students to develop their leadership, organisational, creative and communicative skills and to engage with a wide audience of fellow undergraduates.

At the University of Melbourne, undergraduate students (including honours students) are eligible to participate in the production of the publication. The Triple Helix needs members for our Marketing, Editorial, Finance and HR departments as well as writers for our upcoming fourth edition.

All articles submitted for publication at Melbourne have the opportunity to be published in the online and print editions of international chapters.
